The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card makes for a great, basic travel card, being that it offers plenty of travel protections.

Card benefits

Auto Rental Collision Insurance

Get worldwide primary coverage on car rentals.

You will get coverage for cars rented for up to 31 days. You must pay for the rental with your Sapphire Preferred card in order to be eligible for coverage.

Baggage Delay Insurance

Get covered for essential items such as toiletries, clothing, and chargers for electronic devices,  if your baggage is delayed for more than 6 hours.

Get up to $100 per day after the first 6 hours, and for each additional 24 hours that your baggage is delayed, for a maximum of 5 days.

You must pay for at least part of the trip with your Sapphire Preferred card in order to be eligible for coverage. 

Extended Warranty Protection

Get up to a year of extended warranty on purchases you make. The original manufacturer’s warranty time on the purchase will be matched, up to a year, and max $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account.

You will only get coverage if the original warranty is for 3 years or less. 

You must pay for at least part of the purchase with your Sapphire Preferred card in order to be eligible for coverage. 

Foreign Transaction Fee

There are no foreign transaction fees on this card.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement

Get reimbursed for carry-on and checked-in luggage that is lost or damaged during a trip. 

Get a max of $3,000 per person

You must pay for at least part of the trip with your Sapphire Preferred card in order to be eligible for coverage. 

Purchase Protection

Get a max of $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per year.

Get reimbursed for replacements and repairs, or just reimbursed for new purchases that are stolen, damaged, or lost within 120 days from the date of purchase. 

You must pay for at least part of the purchase with your Sapphire Preferred card in order to be eligible for coverage. 

Roadside Assistance

Get help from a roadside assistance program when you call them. Services include standard towing for up to 5 miles, tire changing, jump start, lockout service, fuel delivery up to 5 gallons, and standard winching. 

Each service call has a fee of $59.95. 

You do not need to pre-enroll in order to be eligible for coverage. 

Travel Accident Insurance

Get coverage for the loss of a limb, sight, speech, hearing, fingers, and loss of life if it occurs on a common carrier. Common carriers are motorized land, water, and air transportation vehicles that are operated by an organization to transport passengers for pay.

Get up to $500,000 per person.

You must pay for at least part of the trip with your Sapphire Preferred card in order to be eligible for coverage.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Get covered a max of $10,000 per person if your trip is canceled or interrupted due to reasons which include but are not limited to; a medical emergency or severe weather conditions. 

You must pay for at least part of the trip with your Sapphire Preferred card in order to be eligible for coverage. 

Trip Delay Reimbursement

Get reimbursed up to $500 per trip if your flight is delayed for more than 12 hours or requires you to stay overnight.

You can get covered for expenses such as meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication, and other personal use items.

You must pay for at least part of the trip with your Sapphire Preferred card in order to be eligible for coverage. 

Anniversary Bonus Points

Get 10% anniversary bonus points when you renew your card. You will get an extra 10% points of what you spend; for spending $25,000 you get 2,500 bonus points.

Extra Redemption Value

Your points on the card are worth 25% more when you redeem them for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Credits

Get $15 Instacart statement credits each quarter. Plus, get a free Instacart+ membership for 6 months.

How the points can be used

Get $50 in annual hotel credits each cardmember year. The hotel booking must be made through the Chase Travel Portal. Existing Chase cardholders will get the $50 credit on their upcoming anniversary year.

Cashback: The points you earn on the card can be used as cashback for 1 penny per point.

Chase Travel: You can get 1.25 penny per point for Chase Travel if you only have the Sapphire Preferred card. 

If you also have the following card then you can redeem your points for Chase Travel as follows:

  • If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve – transfer your points from your Sapphire Preferred card to this card and then you can redeem 1.5 cents per point on Chase Travel, to book flights, car rentals, hotels, and more.

PayYourself Back: You can PayYourself Back by paying for purchases on your card and offsetting the purchases with points. You can get 1 cent per point if you only have the Sapphire Preferred card. If you have the following card then you can redeem your points with PayYourself Back as follows:

  • If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve – get 1.25 cents per point.

This can only be done on purchases within certain categories. Chase constantly changes the eligible categories but following are the current categories until 03/31/22:
